SUSTAINABILITY

Irish designer Sinéad Roberts places material integrity at the centre of her work. Each piece is made to order in our Dublin studio to avoid unnecessary waste and deadstock.

At The Costume Room, sustainability is shaped by how pieces are made, as much as by the materials themselves.

MATERIALS

Material choice is one of the most significant sustainability decisions within the studio.

Fabrics are selected with care, considering how they are made, how they perform, and how they will live over time. Priority is given to materials that offer durability, breathability, and a responsible relationship with their environment and makers.

Rather than working across a wide range of textiles, the studio limits its material palette, choosing fewer fabrics and understanding them deeply. This approach supports consistency, reduces excess, and allows each material to be used with intention.

Further detail on individual fabrics and their origins can be found on the OUR FABRICS page.

MAKING

Each piece is made to order in our Dublin studio.

Working this way allows production to respond directly to demand, avoiding excess stock and unnecessary waste. The making process remains studio-led, allowing for oversight and care at each stage.

Design, cutting, and construction are approached with care, allowing materials to be used efficiently and with minimal waste. This pace of making supports quality, consistency, and accountability throughout the process.

IMPACT

Producing pieces to order allows production to remain closely aligned with demand, reducing excess stock and avoiding unnecessary waste.

Materials are used with care at each stage of making, supporting efficient cutting and construction methods that minimise offcuts and excess. Decisions are made at a studio scale, allowing impact to be considered as part of everyday practice rather than as an afterthought.

Packaging follows the same principles. Pieces are presented in a letterpress branded box made from recycled paper, designed to fold flat when not in use. The boxes are FSC-certified, approved by the Forest Stewardship Council, and packaging is kept minimal, recyclable, and reusable wherever possible.

Impact, for the studio, is measured through restraint, clarity of process, and long-term responsibility rather than scale.

CARE + LONGEVITY

Pieces are designed to be worn often and kept over time. With considered washing, repair where needed, and mindful storage, each piece can remain part of a wardrobe for years.
